The Dennigans of Tomiskey

Firstly though, the marriage of an Ann Dennigan to an Edward Farrell took place in Killashee Parish in 1861 but as the Marriage Register does not give parents’ names, it is impossible to say if this is the correct woman. (See Page 15).

Secondly, and this shall become relevant later, in 1877, a Mary Dennigan and a James Lennon married in Killashee parish.16 While the details have not been retrieved from the GRO, it is thought that this is Mary, the daughter of Thomas Dennigan and Mary Casey.

A transcription of the Civil record of the Marriage of Laurence Dennigan and Anne Clyne is given below.

The copy from the Register of Marriages on Page 11 shows that Laurence Denigan (Dennigan) of Middletown (Middleton) married Anne Clyne of Slieve on 1st May 1877. Anne’s father was Bernard, a farmer. The witnesses were Thomas Diffely (another appearance of that surname) and Bridget Burke. They were married in Clondra (Cloondara) Church.

There is some background on Anne Clyne’s family. Page 13 contains a copy of the Griffith’s Valuation page showing  land held by Bernard Clyan.  Note that he held over 76 Acres. The Cancelled Land Books for Slieve18 show the following changes in land occupancy, most of them, unfortunately, undated.

1st Book

Bernard Clyan Replaced by Mary Clyan in 1862

2nd Book

Thomas Clyan in possession (no date)

3rd Book

Thomas Clyan replaced by Mary Clyan in 1867

4th Book

Mary Clyan in possession

5th Book

Mary Clyan replaced by Thomas Cusask, the lessor, in 1883

6th & Subsequent Books

No mention of Clynes or Clyans

There can be little doubt that Bernard Clyan is the same as Bernard Clyne. The indication is that Bernard, Anne’s father, died and the land passed to Mary Clyan, presumably her mother. A possible match for the death of Bernard Clyne19 has been found and the details are:
